What is a DTF transfer?


A DTF (Direct To Film) transfer is a professionally printed, ready-to-press design that is applied to apparel using heat and pressure. It produces vibrant, durable, full-color prints on a wide variety of fabrics.

The basic process is:

  1. The artwork is printed onto a special clear film using DTF water-based inks.
  2. A fine powdered adhesive is applied to the printed design.
  3. The transfer is cured so the adhesive bonds to the ink.
  4. The finished transfer is placed on the garment and applied with a heat press.
  5. The film is peeled away, leaving the design permanently adhered to the fabric.

DTF is popular because it works on cotton, polyester, blends, light colors, dark colors, and many other fabrics, without needing to pretreat the garment.

Compared with vinyl, DTF is especially useful for full-color artwork, gradients, detailed logos, photographs, and designs with lots of small elements. You also don't have to weed anything—the entire transfer is ready to press.

For a printing business, one of the biggest advantages is that you can print transfers ahead of time and store them. Then when an order comes in, you simply press the appropriate transfer onto the selected shirt or sweatshirt.

What is the minimum I can order?

No Minimums! Whether you need 1 gang sheet or a thousand, we take care of our customers.

What kind of press do I need?

A commercial heat press is strongly recommended for best and most consistent results. Handheld heat presses may work, but pressure and results can vary. Household irons are not recommended, since firm and consistent heat and pressure are key for proper adhesion.

Pressing Instructions

  • Temp at 285°F, for every fabric
  • Press medium-heavy pressure
  • 4 second pre-press garment
  • 7 second press transfer
  • Cold peel (OR) Instant peel — rip it like a Band-Aid!
  • Press for another 7 seconds to seal it with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper.

If you’re used to cold peel, or are working with fine lines and fine details, we recommend cold peeling.

We do use instant peel film, but it does require a certain level of confidence. You have to literally peel the transfers like a Band-Aid — fast!! If you try to slowly lift/peel when hot the transfer will lift on
you.

We also recommend adding Teflon sheets to our upper platens to help prevent the transfers from lifting.

What sizes are available?

Our printer is 24" wide (with a 22" print area), and you can print any length you need!

How do transfers hold up in the wash?

Our transfers have been tested through over 60 wash & dryer cycles before noticeable degradation.

What file format should my artwork be?

PNG is our recommended file format. We also accept AI, EPS, and PDF files.

Files should be 300dpi, with a transparent background.
